Roland DEP-3
Another effects processor on my workbench. The issue with this unit was the complete absence of audio output and a non-functioning input level meter. A quick investigation revealed a short circuit on the +15V supply rail feeding the audio section.
Finding the faulty component wasn’t straightforward because the 7815 voltage regulator would shut itself down due to the short, making it difficult to identify the offending part by touch (normally, the faulty component heats up more than the others). Using a current-limited laboratory power supply quickly exposed the culprit, which spectacularly departed this world. It was a tantalum capacitor used for +15V supply decoupling (one of many). After replacing it and checking the remaining components, the unit came back to life.
